NEWS and CURRENT PROJECTS:

An active explorer of virtual media, Wlodek Bzowka has been developing his methodology by producing pictures out of them. More precisely, his most recent project involves catching the moment of the defeat in the computer game Country Strike in which the figure gets destroyed and blows out.

The shrill hybrid forms cut out of a polyethylene film shown on Wlodek pictures are, actually, mistakes in the computer output data revealed during the generating of the virtual architecture. This one is characteristically built with the means of polygons, even though it –paradoxically- still refers at the same time to the old technique of central perspective.

The way in which Bzowka observes and reveals the short-lived key moment of the mathematical calculation (that should normally remain invisible) and he then renders it through the three dimensional cutting is a prolific one. The glued 3mm thick material, dialoguing with the one dimensionality of the “screaming white” surface of the canvas, provokes a conflicting, aesthetic experience, one where the observer can perceive the tense relation between visibility and invisibility.

This work reveals a singular force and is one of those which can help us reflecting –with the pleasure induced by art- the questions arose by the cohabitation with machines (here, computers) which resemble us more and more.

at the Marstall Ahrensburg/Hamburg group exhibition (February 2007)

…This series of Bzowka´s paintings wears the title “German Fog”. It puts the onlooker on the right track to artistic style romantic, calls up associations with the boom of german painting. It also induces a kind of twilight or magic at the border of a shady world, possibly also something criminal.
In themselves the motifs do not bring us closer to the topic. Then what´s all this presented here actually so formally sharp and clear (not in the least foggy), although without any symbolic reference.

How nice that in art not everything is deciphered at once otherwise to cope with it would get boring pretty soon ! Sunflowers painters are not taught anymore in fine arts academies even when –pardon me deviating a bit from the subject- following the trace of the so hype Leipzig Painting some third-class painters find a niche on the market.
So even when the pictures of Wlodek Bzowka don´t address us immediately there are reasons enough to suppose that they do not just deal with the personal composition of free forms.
But before I unveil the secret of what kind of sound could be evocated while watching the paintings, let me just collect a few possible references.

It seems that in the shady chromatic a shadow world appears, whose forms –alike the wonderful parable of the Platon´s cavern- only represent the contours of very three-dimensional chrysalis, or may be even the contours of living figures.
On top of this it must be mentioned that the works have a relation of 16 to 9, which is a typical cinema format.
The forms, so sharp they might be, wear all along a weak horizontal line, similar to the well-known line structure of a computer or TV screen.
As for the material out of which the forms are so precise cutted out, it proves to be a very ordinary cloth –no matter whether we recognize it at once or not. Screen, cinema, fog, stencil, imagination, action… the appropriate sound would be hard noises, shots and screams.

Since many years Wlodek plays, collects, copies and works out the always declared non grata computer war games.
The motifs of these large cuttings, Matisse alike, are digital pictures of computer mistakes seized in their dynamic fall.
This very short moment is the one where human bodies or architectures of false calculated room spaces break into pieces.
Momentarily the mathematical construction is being made visible, thus leading to the destruction of the illusion.
These are –now and then in both meanings of the word- bottomless and incredible realms which are even stranger as the usually indeed almost perfectly simulated parallel game world.
