Analysis of Piro della Francesa's fresco in the chapel of Arezzo, Italy

Piero della Francesca's original fresco from 1466 "The Legend of the True Cross"

My analysis of the different areas of space: 1. Front stage, 2. View into the city of Arezzo, 3. Landscape, 4. View onto the city of Arezzo

The single areas are sketched onto transparent architecture-paper and superimposed to conclude the hole szene:

The analyzed areas of different space and some geometric and color analysis were all applied to a
painting. This painting was done on glass, enabling the viewer to look at the scene from both sides.

Stills from a 3D digital movie: I transferred the two-dimensional transparent areas of space into a 3D built chapel, which based on the original architecture in Arezzo. Next, I started animation and camera movement to focus the view on the transformation of two-dimensional planes into three dimensional space and the transformation of the unmoved image to a moving image (film/movie) within the digital image.

The whole short-movie (15 MB) - 2003:

Using QuickTime you can view the 3D short-movie.

I combined the moving 3D images with a digitally mixed audio-composition of Mussorgsky's
"Images of an Exhibition" to give the transformation of two-dimensional images to
three-dimensional moving images a more dramatical touch.
